Buyers Use Tricks To Win eBay Auctions.
If you've ever lost an eBay auction in the very last second, you
know how frustrating online auctions can be. But what if we told
you there is a way to win?
You know how an on line auction works -- make the highest bid
and wait till it's over. But a new crop of services are making
winning a bid easy for some, and difficult for others.
First eBay changed the way thousands of people shop. Now eBay sniping
may change things again.
"You pay them whatever fee to bid on your behalf in that
very last second," explained Daryl Knight with EZ Auction.
Sites like Bidnappper, Auction Stealer and Auction Sniper will
-- for a fee -- use a computer to place last second bids. They
do the work for you whether you're at the computer or not. The
sites have clocks synchronized with eBay's to get bids in at the
last possible moment. Sellers say it's the clock that makes the
difference.
Knight said, "Unless your clock is synchronized with eBay
and you know exactly when to bid at that last second and you have
a high speed connection, then you take your chances."
Most of the auction sniping sites charge a monthly fee. Ten dollars
will get you a month of sniping in most cases, but Auction Sniper
charges customers one percent of the winning bid up to $10 a month.
Some sellers think the programs are bad for eBay business.
Todd Quattlebaum with EZ Bayer said, "From the seller standpoint,
the possibility is that the item will not bring the highest price
it could."
Experts say conventional bidders who watch an auction creep up
slowly over a week may think they will get a deal. But buyers with
the highest bid who fully expect to win the auction will lose out
in the end to a sniping program and may become fed up with the
whole process.
"The other bidders are looking for an item for a few days
during the auction process and it is running at a price that is
significantly less than it ultimately sells for," Quattlebaum
explained.
Experts say if you feel you were outbid by a sniper, you might
want to use good old fashioned person to person contact. Email
the seller, explain what happened and if they have another item
in stock they might sell it to you at the closing price.
But a pro like Knight say he's never lost an auction, and does
not use sniping programs. His secret?
"I wait until the last second," he said.
Not all the sniping sites work the same way. Some use network-based
computers. Others turn your own computer into the sniper.

Snappy Auctions Takes New Platform Global.
Not even two years into franchising, Snappy Auctions is tapping
new domestic and international markets.
Debbie Gordon, president of the eBay drop-off store, is launching
Snappy Sales Solutions (S3), a business-to-business brand of the
company, and applying for licenses to set up shop in the United
Kingdom and Japan. She says her moves are a response to the high
traffic eBay has seen in its business and industrial category and
its continued expansion overseas.
S3 is a set of marketing tools Gordon had designed to have a more
professional appeal over the company's original brand, which mimics
the whimsical eBay trademark. The 100 Snappy Auctions franchises
have free rein to use the S3 Web site and logo to set up a campaign
to solicit business owners to sell off old or unused equipment
and excess inventory.
Catherine England, a spokeswoman for eBay, says in the third quarter
of 2005 alone, $1.5 billion worth of items sold in the business
and industrial category, making it one of the most active areas
on the site.
With S3 as his platform, Loren Hall, owner of two Snappy Auctions
stores, intends to get a piece of that multi-billion dollar pie.
He is focusing his Brentwood location in Maryland Farms strictly
on business-to-business transactions.
"(S3) adds credence that we can and will work with other
businesses," Hall says. "We're already doing some of
it right now but we just didn't have the infrastructure laid out
as neatly as the Snappy Sales Solutions has done for us."
Kristi Gilbert, also an owner of two Snappy Auctions stores, says
she was ahead of the game because the business plan she set up
before opening her locations last July listed business to business
as a market objective. She says it just makes sense revenue-wise
- higher priced items turn a higher commission.
It also makes sense for businesses looking to get rid of goods.
According to a release by Snappy Auctions, eBay and Accenture have
conducted research that shows businesses often generate twice the
sales by selling online.
And since items on eBay can sell internationally, Gilbert says
companies have the chance to liquidate property that otherwise
wouldn't capitalize. "Obsolete equipment here in the U.S.
is not obsolete in other countries," she says.
England says eBay opened international markets in 1999 and now
has 33 of them in 18 different languages. Gordon is trying to start
franchising in just two countries but she sees the opportunity
in going into more - next on the list is Australia and Spain.
Gordon is even looking to try her hand in places where eBay has
yet to reach, by utilizing other online auctioning sites, such
as Yahoo's.
"eBay is the strongest one right now, but we're confident
that some of the other players will be of value to us," Gordon
says. "Any good business person knows there's never going
to be a 100 percent monopoly on the market."
But going outside the familiar operations of eBay isn't the only
challenge Gordon will face while franchising internationally.
Jim Amos, managing partner of Franklin-based Eagle Alliance, a
private equity firm, has set up nearly 3,000 franchises outside
of the United States while working for I Can't Believe It's Yogurt
and Mail Boxes Etc. He says the international markets are "littered
with companies trying to approach (them) inappropriately, not willing
to accommodate for cultural difference."
"The most important consideration is to choose the right
partner," Amos says. "You can shorten your learning curve
and not have to know all the differences in culture and politics
in order to develop."
On this side of the Atlantic, Gordon is having to keep an eye
on staff growth needed to manage the new ventures and is considering
a larger home base. Snappy Auctions is currently headquartered
in Cummins Station on 10th Avenue South.
"We're popping at the seams," she says. "It's a
good problem to have."

Antiques In The West of England & Wales.
The West of England and Wales have been favourite stopovers with
professional antique buyers and private collectors in the USA for
many years, but whilst many visitors have their regular contacts
and usually include the area as part of an antiques buying visit
in Great Britain few realise the full potential the region offers,
and subsequently miss many of the quality resources available.
What makes the area even more appealing is that it is accessible
in less than seven hours via Bristol International (BIA), from
Newark Airport, New York. Add these direct flights to an extensive
network of connecting domestic services in the USA by carrier Continental
Airlines and the result is an easy gateway to an enormous antiques
resource.
Within eighty miles or about two hours drive from Bristol (BIA),
buyers will have at their disposal what is possibly the most concentrated
and varied source of quality antiques services that Britain has
to offer and presenting them with little, if any need to venture
further afield. Northerly the Cotswolds is home to dozens of reputable
antiques specialists in the beautiful towns of Tetbury, which is
fast becoming an antiques town in itís own right, Stow on the Wold,
Moreton in Marsh and Burford are some to name just a few and are
complimented by an established antiques market every Friday in
Cirencester.
Journeying southerly from BIA, perhaps your first stop would be
at the Monday antiques market in Taunton before continuing to the
small market town of Honiton, Devon where the visitor will find
a varied selection of no less than 29 antique dealers of furniture,
art and second-hand books, with many others to be found in nearby
villages, thereby extending the region southerly past Exeter and
south easterly into the county of Dorset.
Due east from the airport and within just 15 miles lies the world
heritage city of Bath which has it's own very active antique dealers
association, BABAADA. The Bath and Bradford on Avon Antique Dealers
Association not only provides a network of more than 50 members
but is also well qualified to assist on all antiques matters, from
sourcing to shipping. Gail McLeod secretary of BABAADA says, "Many
of our members already have established clients in the USA who
rely on our expertise and integrity when visiting the West of Englandî.
www.babaada.com
Continuing easterly and still within easy reach, buyers will find
a further extensive selection of quality antiques in the picturesque
town of Hungerford. With two antique centres together with fifteen
other general and specialist dealers, not forgetting a regular
fair, the town is perhaps one of the best-kept antiques secrets
in the UK!
Throughout south and mid Wales visitors will find some exceptional
examples of fine Welsh antique furniture including dressers and
decorative items from various specialist dealers and several auction
rooms including a weekly Sunday sale near Newport. The area extends
as far as the tiny Welsh border town of Hay on Wye, renowned for
itís seemingly endless supply of antiquarian bookshops, and the
annual Hay Festival, which attracts 80,000 worldwide visitors.
Visiting the UK on antiques buying trip for the first time can
be, though needlessly, a daunting prospect, even established buyers
meeting new contacts sometimes need guidance, so it is reassuring
to find that many vendors in the region are members of either their
local dealer or specialist association, or one of the two national
associations, BADA and LAPADA. In fact the professionalism and
integrity of many British antiques businesses are endorsed by membership
of more than one professional body. Visit www.lapada.co.uk and
www.bada.org for further information and full lists of members
when planning your visit, itíll pay dividends.
The region also abounds with some excellent antique fairs, notably
at the Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, which is
under an hour from BIA. The Showground is home to a very large
fair on weekends six times a year by one organiser, and a regular
Flea Market by another. There is also a very large fair held five
times a year at West Point Exhibition Centre near Exeter with a
capacity of up to 500 exhibitors, and a monthly fair on Sunday's
at Malvern Showground, which is less than two hours drive away
in the north of the area. There are in addition many more good
quality fairs, some specialist such as Militaria, Glass, Textiles
and Books, held throughout the region, mostly at weekends. Similarly,
all the dealer associations in the area host their own events throughout
the year, for example BABAADA, during March. LAPADA, Cheltenham
Racecourse in October, which coincides with the Cotswolds Antique
Dealers Association own 'Members Exhibitionsí in the same month.
www.cotswolds-antiques-art.com
At the last count over sixty auction rooms were found in the region
with a vast range of items, some have weekly general sales and
many hold scheduled specialist sales, the nearest sale to the visitors
arrival is at Clevedon, about ten miles away.
Together with an established infrastructure of local supporting
services, from a complete range of accommodation to car and goods
vehicle hire, nearby shipping services and cargo agents based at
BIA, ensures that the US antiques buyer has every facility that
is necessary at their disposal to ensure a smooth and stress free
visit, yet maximises time for the visitor to the full. This is
backed-up by the claim that the comparatively congestion free BIA
usually allows that the visitor will be on the road as quickly
as possible. Indeed, with the close location of some sources it
is quite possible that buyers could certainly get down to business
within an hour or so of collecting their baggage from the aircraft.
