Dargate
Auction Galleries Present...
April 29th Antiquarian Book Auction
April 30th & May 1st
Mid-Century Modern, Belleek, & Glass Auction
Dargate is offering many fine and unusual items at auction. This month
we have a special selection of antiquarian books from the Purser-Griffith
library at Rathmines Castle, Ireland that go to auction on Friday, April
29th, beginning at 12PM.
This library contains
books from several generations of this family, who had distinguished
themselves for mechanical and engineering careers and by inventing
stout beer for Guiness. Some of this background is evident
in lots 2156 Middleton’s Celestial Atlas, lot 2172
The Mechanical Principles of Engineering & Architecture. Also
poetry and history are represented in the collection, such
as lot 2153 The Complete Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson
and lot 2177 Lays of Ancient Rome (from 1843). Religious
topics include lot 2133, which is a 1703
Biblical commentary with fine engravings and lot
2134, a 1794 volume about the Mission
of the United Brethren among Native Americans. With such a
comprehensive library amassed over several centuries there
are books to appeal to many interests and we invite you to
examine the full catalog.
During our April
30th & May 1st auction we will be selling items
from the Francis Fair Estate in Youngstown and from the collections
of Dolly Miller of Indiana and The Samios Collection, Pittsburgh.
Some of these items and items from our other many fine consignors
include a wonderful Belleek collection (lots 3263,
3264, 3268, 3237). Unusual commemorative
enamel cups with royal and World’s Exposition motifs
are seen with lot 2828 among others. Along
a similar Russian vein are Russian enamel pieces
(lots 2825 and 2826). Also look at lots 2821 and
2708 for other Russian collectables. Great glass items,
such as Mont Joye cameo vase (lot 2788), a Steuben
blue aurene bowl (lot 2786) and modern glass (lot 3392) represent
an abundance of desirable delights. We are selling many Mid
20th century items on May 1st. They include furniture
by Bertoia, a reclining chair (lot 3279), tulip chairs
(lot 3353) and Russel Wright (see lot 3439 for a desk / chair
combo). Russel Wright ceramics also are in the auction.
For Coca-Cola collectors we have 1950s and 1960s items such
as a painted metal Coca-Cola bottle carrier (lot
3566) and Coca-Cola electric clocks. Fine R.
J. Horner furniture includes the rare pairing of
a partner's desk and a bookcase (lots 2811 & 2812).
Art highlights include fine statuary in
bronze (lots 2731, 3014), ivory and marble
by Huhsmann (lot 3245), and parian ware (lots
2861, 2862). Paintings include a signed Francis
Picabia watermedia, a George T. Hetzel farmscape
(lot 3417), and a fine and large Virgil
Cantini enamel on steel composition (lot 3413). Local
painters James Sulkowski, Nick Farbacher, and Diane Jorstad also
have lovely oil landscapes coming to auction, all of which
are fine examples to build an art collection upon (see
lots 2735, 2663, and 3305). Among the many other
items are a large selection of bakelite jewelry,
enamel pins, Victorian mourning jewelry, and cameo
pins (see lot 2654). Cast iron doorstops, numerous
lamps, American art pottery, many silver flatware sets, and estate
rugs round out a very generous and exciting Spring

Auction
News
Tis
the season for É auctions
Every spring, several area nonprofit organizations plan auctions to raise much-needed
funds to continue their important programs. Here's a rundown on three that
are coming up soon.
Boys & Girls
Club auction
The "granddaddy" of local auctions is in its 31st year. I have been attending
Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County auctions for 23 of those years
and it is always the best party of the year. Not only is the evening great
fun - - talking to old friends and making new ones - - but there are items
to fit every pocketbook. Last year I bid on lots of good stuff and "won" a
complete auto detailing from Auger's Auto Body Collision. That service will
be up for bid again this year, along with hundreds of items, from jewelry to
sports tickets and memorabilia, from theater and symphony outings to gift certificates
from many area restaurants.
Bidding opportunities for the Saturday, May 7, event range from silent and
live auctions to raffles and an "after-hours" auction, which takes place after
the conclusion of the live auction
One unique live auction prize brings together the old and the new. Eighteen
years ago, a dinner was hosted and served by then Royal Oak Mayor Robert Stocker,
Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jean Chamberlain, state Rep.
(now state Sen.) Shirley Johnson, Chamber President Anne Scott, and myself,
then publisher of The Daily Tribune. Those same offices are now held by Mayor
Jim Ellison, Chamber Executive Director Liz Tillander, state Rep. Marie Donigan,
Chamber President Jim Schneider, Trib Publisher Rick Land and Mirror Publisher
Ron Shamma. Bidders in the live auction will have a choice between dinner with
the 1987 or the 2005 group.
Sports items include an autographed jersey from Detroit Piston Ben Wallace,
an autographed jersey from Detroit Lion Hall of Famer Barry Sanders and autographed
skates from Red Wing Darren McCarty. Trips to the Cayman Islands, a San Francisco
and Napa Valley vineyards tour, and a week at the Naples, Fla., Ritz-Carleton
will be up for bid. Another great item is 52 weeks of groceries from Holiday
Market. A 14 kt. gold garnet necklace up for bid would make a perfect Mother's
Day gift.
The $150 ticket price includes a surf and turf dinner at the Troy Marriott;
reservations can be made by calling the club at 248-544-4166. We can be proud
that our Boys & Girls Club is the most honored in the country, but the
club needs our help to continue providing, as is its motto: "A positive place
for kids."
YWCA auction
The YWCA Oakland Branch auction is celebrating its 10th year on Saturday, April
30, with an evening of fun, food and bidding, led by former Royal Oak Mayor
and local attorney Bill Urich as auctioneer. George Gomez, DTE Energy executive
and community activist, will emcee the event, which will be held in the "YW's" facility
at 839 S. Crooks, Clawson.
Auction items include a trip to Cabo San Lucas, many sports items including
autographed Red Wings and Pistons jerseys, Detroit Zoo and Garland golf packages,
fine Irish crystal and many gift baskets. Tickets are only $20 per person and
can be reserved by calling 248-435-9100.
All proceeds will be used to further the programs of the YWCA, which include
fitness, childcare, Special Olympics and YCA Interim House and a domestic violence
shelter.
Girlstown auction
Even though the Girlstown auction, "In the Company of Angels," is being held
at the Woodlands of Van Buren, 39670 Ecorse Road in Wayne, it has long been
supported by many local women. Among them are Muriel Versagi of Huntington
Woods, who is Girlstown Foundation secretary, and Sue Boehm of Clawson, serving
as treasurer. Eva Joyce Burns of Clawson is auction committee treasurer. Tickets
can be ordered by sending a check for $40 for each ticket to Eva at 710 Elmsford,
Clawson 48017.
Saturday, May 7, is the date for the 20th annual silent, live and themed-basket
auction, which includes a buffet dinner. Festivities kick off at 6:30 p.m.
Beyond auctions
The Royal Oak Historical Society invites everyone to an open house and sneak
preview of a "work in progress" to see examples of future exhibits at the new
museum. Recently moved into the former wood shop of Churchill Community Center,
the Royal Oak Historical Society Museum's displays are under construction. "There
is enough to see and hear that visitors will experience Royal Oak history in
the form of maps, archival documents, photographs and historic object," according
to Museum Curator Muriel Versagi. Yes, the same Muriel Versagi mentioned above.
I think Muriel holds the record for most mentions in this column and deservedly
so.
Visitors will enjoy exhibits from historic advertising gimmicks to a serious
collection of Shrine of the Little Flower material. I recently saw a preview
and it was fascinating. The open house, which will be held from 3 to 8 p.m.
on Monday, April 25, can be entered through the north side of Churchill Center
at 707 Girard. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. For information,
call Muriel at 248-542-7449.
Mix & Mingle
The four Junior Optimist Clubs of Clawson are sponsoring "The Music Goes Round
and Around," a third annual community mix and mingle for kids, teens and adults.
The casual dress event will feature something for everyone -- music, dancing,
karaoke, games and pool, as well as appetizers and refreshments that are included
in the ticket price.
Join the fun from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Hunter Community Center,
509 Fisher Court, Clawson. Tickets are only $6 at the door.
Junior Optimist Clubs begin at the 5th grade level, are part of Optimist International,
and have clubs in each school as well as one in the middle school and high
school.
The Clawson Optimist Clubs welcomes new member applications. They meet the
first and third Wednesday of every month at 7 a.m. at the Clawson City Hall
Community Room.

N.H.
company auctions off rare coin collection
Gold Treasure
NEW
YORK (AP) — Bidders from three dozen countries paid more than $10 million for
a collection rare coins auctioned off this week by a New Hampshire company.
The 2,500 coins included pieces from ancient Greece and Rome, an extensive
collection of gold from Latin America and rare items from Japan. They were
examined, sorted and auctioned by American Numismatic Rarities of Wolfeboro.
Until recently, many of the coins had been undisturbed for nearly a half-century
in the Baltimore bank vault of famed collector Louis Eliasberg. He was known
as the King of Coins.
A huge, 5-ounce gold coin made in Venice around 1770 went for more than $379,000.
It was a record price for a non-ancient Italian coin.

BP's
Browne set to meet Putin
MOSCOW
(Reuters) - BP Chief Executive Sir John Browne will meet
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, just weeks
after the government slapped the British oil major's
joint venture in Russia with a $1 billion (520 million
pound) back tax claim.
A BP (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research) official confirmed the meeting would
take place in the Kremlin but declined to give details.
Analysts said the meeting was scheduled long before the back tax claim came
to light and added that Browne might focus on broader issues such as Russia's
investment climate and investor confidence, which was seriously undermined
by the YUKOS affair.
Some analysts said Browne might want to mention the new subsoil law, which
will bar firms with majority foreign ownership from auctions for strategic
fields - a move that analysts say may boost corruption and slow BP's growth.
"It appears the Kremlin is intent on demonstrating that it places high political
and economic importance on improving relations with big business," said Caius
Rapanu from UralSib bank.
"The meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice could put some pressure
on Putin to reaffirm his recent pro-market assurances that further YUKOS-like
back tax claims are not in the cards," he added.
On Wednesday, Rice called on Russia, the world's second largest oil exporter,
to boost supplies to help bring record oil prices down but questioned whether
Putin's tight grip over the economy was helping the business climate and foreign
investment.
Tax claims have become the main source of fear for investors after Russia's
once top oil firm, YUKOS, was ruined with $27.5 billion in tax claims in what
YUKOS says was Kremlin vengeance for political ambitions of its main owner,
Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Rice said Washington was closely watching the magnate's trial as prosecutors
seek a 10-year sentence.
SUBSOIL, KOVYKTA, SAKHALIN
Analysts say YUKOS will remain a one-off example due to political motivation,
while back tax bills against TNK-BP, Russia's number two oil firm, would be
significantly reduced.
The
Positive Club
Have you ever thought
When you were caught
In the middle of the storm
Crying loud, hue and cry
And still nobody gave it a try
You shouted, you screamed high
And everybody took it as a lie?
Suddenly you got up
And recollected the strength
With utmost faith, fought till the end
Suddenly you won, simply at the dot
You have won, believe it or not
Have you ever thought
From where the strength came
It resides within us from beginning till the end
Only if we trust the courage we have
We can solve all our problems within ourselves
If we cannot, how can anyone else?
Only we know our desires and only we know our plans
So don't search outward, only deep inside
You will get all the answers
Only if you will listen to the quiet
Problems will never end
How many times we'll knock outside?
How many times will people stand by our side?
End it here and end it right
Fight yourself with all your might
You will win because you possess the strength
And even if you don't
You will not regret trying
In the end.
