Royal Auction Services
Launches Exclusive Internet Auction Module
Internet Bidders to
vie with Floor Bidders using the company's exclusive Live Auction
Website
Chase City, VA (PRWEB) June 4, 2005 -- The live auction industry grew to a
whopping $217.2 billion in sales in the year 2004, according to The National
Auctioneer's Association.
"Combine the rising popularity of live auctions with the growth potential of
the Internet, and you can see why traditional Auction Houses need to take their
auctions online" says Jim Francis, President of Royal Auction Services, a traditional
full-service auction house based in Virginia.
The Internet Live Auction market is currently dominated by the likes of eBay
Live.com and ProxyBid.com. However, there is plenty of scope for traditional
brick-and-mortar auction houses, which can provide a wider range of services
and facilities to its customers.
"A full-service auction house can provide much more than a platform for buying
and selling online" asserts Francis. Currently in its fifth year of operation,
Royal Auction Services is in the final stages of implementing its Internet-based
live auction module. But the company is no newcomer to the area of live auctions,
with two generations of live auction experience and an auction facility that
is "one of the largest in the area."
Citing 'Service' as their competitive edge, the company boasts of facilities
that no Internet-based auction company can match, including:
- Spacious live auction facility.
- Capability to conduct auctions at the consignor's site.
- Several acres of secure, fenced-in storage area at the Chase City Fairgrounds.
- 10,000-sq. ft. retail store for year-round display and direct sales.
- Several large tractor-trailers to move heavy machinery, excess inventory
or an entire estate in one trip. Smaller trucks and trailers for smaller consignments.
- Dedicated online auction module and phone bidding service.
- eBay trading assistance for small or unique consignments, with daily UPS
pick-up and freight services.
- Option to purchase direct from sellers
- Experienced staff to serve the needs of businesses, financial organizations,
local government, professionals and individual consignors.
"While our primary aim is to enable remote bidders and consignors to participate
in our live auctions," said Francis, "We were surprised that a remarkable number
of local buyers wanted to bid online," he added.
"Despite being a registered trading assistant on eBay, we opted to develop our
own online auction website for the exclusive use of our customers," said Francis "We
wanted to make online auctions more cost-competitive for everyone. With most
of our large auction events, the added eBay fees would have made it impractical
to bid online. Also, we need to keep our floor bidders informed about sale results."
With traditional auction houses taking their auctions online, customers can
enjoy 'the best of both worlds' by taking part in a live auction online. "Imagine
the convenience of bidding from your home PC, coupled with a wide range of
services and facilities that only a full-service, traditional auction house
can provide. That's our Internet auction module for you," concluded Francis,
setting an exciting precedent for the future of live auction events.
Royal Auctions will conduct it’s trial run of it new auction module on June
24, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. Internet customers will be able to bid from the comfort
of their homes, against the live crowd at the auction house. Registration is
required prior to the auction for all attendee’s that wish to participate in
the bidding. Photo’s and descriptions of the items will be posted on the website
well in advance of the auction.

Local warehouse
keeps tobacco auction alive
By JUSTIN STORY
One local tobacco warehouse will be alive this fall with the sound of the auctioneer's
call, as the Burley Marketing Association in Kentucky announced this week that
Kentucky King Tobacco Warehouse and five other Kentucky warehouses will hold
independent auctions this year.
This year has marked a sea of change for burley tobacco growers, as they take
their first tentative steps in a new economy after the federal tobacco buyout
eliminated the price support system the government had in place since the Depression.
The federal buyout means that tobacco farmers now have to contract directly
with cigarette manufacturers to sell their crop, whereas in the past farmers
also had the option of a guaranteed sale at auctions.
With fewer people growing burley this year, and with the remaining crops selling
for less, however, having one warehouse open for auction gives concerned farmers
more opportunity to sell their tobacco.
"This year, more than ever, tobacco farmers need an alternative in selling their
tobacco to maintain a competitive market for their product," the Burley Marketing
Association said in a news release.
Though an old method of selling tobacco returns to Kentucky King, the current
parameters apply.
"The auction will not have the price support of the burley co-op," said Mason
County Extension Agent Bill Peterson.
Two months ago, Peterson said he anticipated 25-30 percent less tobacco to
be grown in the county this year compared to last year.
Compounding the diminished crop, farmers that operated under the federal price
support system are losing money on their tobacco sales this year.
"This year burley is selling at about 45-50 cents lower than last year's support
prices," said Peterson. "There are some (farmers) that have indicated they want
that option this year to sell through the auction."
In recent years, the vast majority of burley had been sold through direct contracts,
though Maysville's tobacco warehouses could still attract many growers and
quota holders until the end of the auction system.
Kentucky King Warehouse owner Elden Ginn could not be reached for comment.
Other Kentucky warehouses holding auctions this year are located in Mount Sterling,
Lexington, Danville, Harrodsburg and Somerset.
Times and dates for the auction will be set this fall.

Lost Items Going
Going Gone.
TALLAHASSEE - The
forgotten trinkets and heirlooms of lost lives accumulate in
Thomas Egler's state government office every summer.
Behind a locked door and sign-in post, boxloads of loot from the bowels of
bank vaults -- from gold and gems to revolvers, false teeth and cremated remains
-- is carted into Florida's Bureau of Unclaimed Property vault in Tallahassee.
Egler, the vault supervisor, inventories the detritus until an heir is found
or it is auctioned off.
The next auction is scheduled for July in Fort Lauderdale. For the second year
in a row, it's due to be simulcast online through the auctioneering company's
Web site. But the sales have gotten so successful, and the pot of lost valuables
so much bigger, that Florida wants to make the auction online year-round.
"We just don't have the room to store all these items. We make a diligent attempt
to find the owners. When that fails, then of course we have to liquidate it into
cash," Egler said.
"I'd rather give it back to its owner than sell it."
Most of the valuables are easily sold. Nobody wants the private oddities, the
stuffed pets and toupees.
Under every postmark and brown wrapping is a mystery. Egler and his small staff
often marvel at the knick-knacks and treasures they find, and what they reveal
about the people who accumulated them.
They've found coins from the Spanish treasure galleon Atocha, which sank in
a hurricane off the Keys in 1622.
"We've seen a vault that had nothing but fur coats in it," Egler recalled. "We
have a boarding pass for the Lusitania. We had, a couple years ago, a whole lot
of items from Bonnie and Clyde -- photographs of the bodies, photographs of the
cars. A whole bunch of letters."
Florida, like most states, takes possession of lockboxes, securities and bank
accounts when financial institutions lose track of their owners. State lawmakers
have made it a thriving enterprise for government, passing laws in recent years
that have opened the gates for unclaimed liquid currency to flow into state
coffers.
Last year, a record $173.3 million in unclaimed financial assets went into
the fund that provides state aid to school districts, up from $73 million in
2000. And thanks to a bill passed this year to crack down on private firms
that charge a fee to find owners, Florida expects at least a $56 million surge
again next year.
By comparison, the safe-deposit boxes the state takes over reap only chump
change. The contents are turned over after a box goes unused for three years.
Florida investigators usually spend another year trying to find an heir, then
the items are auctioned off. Last year's unclaimed property auction in Miami
netted $806,312.
Owners never lose the right to claim their money. The state sets aside enough
money to pay claims and uses the balance in a trust fund to support public
education.
Jose Villalobos, a West Miami city attorney and the father of state Senate
Majority Leader Alex Villalobos, dropped by the auction in July 2004, he said,
after buying a personal watercraft at a separate federal government auction
of seized property.
"I didn't know there was so much unclaimed property. I was just curious," he
said. "I didn't go to shop; I just came out to look."
Over the years, millions of dollars in Floridians' goods has been sold off
at auctions in Tampa, Orlando and South Florida to retirees and jewelry dealers,
the deep-pocketed and politically connected.
The biggest buyers have been out-of-state dealers from New York, Arizona and
Tennessee, state records show. Several Floridians also make the list. The hottest
sale items? Watches and jewelry.
Marilyn Varcoe, a Naples psychologist, went to last year's auction to try to
buy back some of the $60,000 in jewelry that burglars stole from her home in
1997. The jewelry was seized by police. Unable to prove it was hers, Varcoe
was told she could buy her belongings back at the state auction.
Many of the stolen pieces were collected from her travels to China, Turkey,
Athens and Cairo. She found them lumped into large plastic bags with other
pieces sold in bulk. The crowd of professional dealers and Miami sophisticates
was intimidating, she said. Varcoe didn't hang around for long, and walked
away with only the $770 the state gave her from the sale of some of the jewelry.

People are always
blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe

The people who get
on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances

-- George Bernard
Shaw, "Mrs. Warren's Profession," 1893
Most people
live, whether physically, intellectually or morally, in
a very restricted circle of their potential being.
They make use of a very small portion of their possible consciousness, and
of their soul's resources in general, much like a man who, out of his
whole bodily organism, should get into a habit of using and moving only
his little finger.
Great emergencies and crises show us how much greater our vital resources are
than we had supposed.
