Put
me in, coach River City Rascals auctioning
one-day pro contract
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- WANTED: Charitable someone at least 18 years old itching
to take a crack at playing in a professional baseball game, ready to go deep
but with deep enough pockets to buy the chance. Glove, shoes and a pen to sign
an injury waiver required. Chewing tobacco not included.
Thinking the offer could be fair game as a gift or for anyone looking to
fulfill a fantasy involving America's pastime, minor-league baseball's River
City Rascals
of the independent Frontier League are auctioning off a "one-day professional
contract" with the team.
The highest bidder on the eBay listing that began April 28 and runs through
8 p.m. CDT Sunday gets to hit and gets a guaranteed half inning in the outfield
May 20 when the Rascals host the Gateway Grizzles in their only preseason game
at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, a St. Louis suburb.
As of midday Wednesday, the only bid was $999.
The winner gets 20 tickets to the game, at least one trip to the batter's box
and will be furnished with a uniform, with the jersey and hat theirs to keep.
The player is on the hook for his or her own glove, shoes, transportation,
meals, any housing or possible groin pull.
Proceeds from the sale go to the United Way.
On the team's Web site, the Rascals -- an independent team not affiliated with
any major-league team -- said they consider the auction a natural extension
of unique items already for sale on eBay, including everything from islands
to and a wad of gum chewed by Britney Spears.
Messages were left Wednesday with the Rascals seeking comment on the promotion.
If the game is rained out, the winner will play with the Rascals when they
again face the Grizzlies on May 21 at GMC Stadium in nearby Sauget, Ill.

Faltering
start to spring art auctions at Sotheby's
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The spring art auctions
started with a hiccup on Tuesday when the highest priced work and
other top lots failed to sell at Sotheby's
Impressionist and modern sale, leading executives to conclude their estimates
were just too high.
Some works, notably Max Beckmann's "Self Portrait With Crystal Ball" and Pablo
Picasso's "Women of Algiers" commanded strong prices. But Wassily Kandinsky's "Two
Riders and Reclining Figures," promoted as a significant masterpiece, went
unsold when bidding topped out at $11.25 million.
Sotheby's had estimated the work would sell for $15 million to $25 million.
The spotty result for the first big sale was troubling. "We had some good moments
and we had some bad moments," said David Norman, Sotheby's co-chair of Impressionist
and modern art. "I wish there had been more good ones."
The auction house in some cases appeared to price some of the works above their
worth. "The result was estimates that were just too high for the pictures at
this time," said Norman, citing the Kandinsky as a "simple rejection of the
estimate."
He said the market remains strong "but there's just a limit. It gets to the
point where you've topped out with estimates and it's time to pull back."
One star painting turned out to be Beckmann's haunting self-portrait, painted
in 1936 just after the Nazis closed down his exhibition space and branded his
work "degenerate art." Estimated at $10 million to $15 million, it sold for
$16,816,000, including Sotheby's commission.
The top lot was Picasso's "Algiers" work, which fetched $18,608,000, within
the $15 million to $20 million estimate.
The auction took in a total of $91,294,400, well short of the low pre-sale
estimate of $127 million. Twenty of the 65 lots on offer went unsold.
However, some other works commanded strong prices. Fernand Leger's "The Campers," sold
for $7,632,000, just under the high estimate of $8 million, and Alberto Giacometti's
sculpture "Diego with sweater," went for $3.6 million.
The auctions continue on Wednesday with Christie's sale of Impressionist and
modern art.

Vacheron
Constantin auctions record breaking platinum watch.
Luxury
watchmaker Vacheron
Constantin has auctioned
off what it calls "an
exceptional gentleman's
watch" made out of
platinum to mark
the company's 250th
anniversary.
The Swiss firm has now sold the watch - entitled Saint-Gervais - in a record-breaking
auction underlining the exclusivity of the precious metal.
The platinum watch, which includes a perpetual calendar and boasts a 250 hour
power reserve, fetched a staggering 446,250 Swiss francs ($374,000).
Antiquorum hosted the Quarter Millenium of Vacheron Constantin auction, with
the auction house chairman Osvaldo Patrizzi hailing the oeuvre on show.
He told JCK the auction had underlined Vacheron Constantin's "importance in
the world of watch collecting and reaffirms its place in the top echelon of
watch manufacturers".
A total of 250 items were auctioned to commemorate the firm's anniversary,
with the $15 million sale taking place in Geneva.

The Positive Club
The Magic Ingredient
It happens every day. My dentist relayed to me recently
that he was about
to hire a new member for his office staff. I’ve narrowed
the applicants
down to the final four, he offered, and have pretty
much decided who it
will be. How’d you decide? I asked. His reasoning was
simple. It echoed
the results of a nation-wide survey of business hiring
executives reported
in the Wall Street Journal not too long ago. You see,
everyone’s looking
for it. It has incredible value. We like, love, and
respect people who
have it. It’s results seem almost magical. If you’ve
already got it, you
know it (and are undoubtedly reaping the benefits).
If not, you also know
it. The good new is, it doesn’t depend on how well
you did in school,
doesn’t take years to develop, nor cost a bunch of
money. What is it?
Attitude.
Attitude is a reflection of the
person inside. And while the external
circumstances in your life might go crazy from
time to time, you can
always chart your own path by grabbing onto a great
attitude. Viktor
Frankl, psychologist and survivor of the holocaust
in World War II,
observed the following: We who lived in concentration
camps can remember
the men who walked through the huts comforting others,
giving away their
last piece of bread. They may have been few in number,
but they offer
sufficient proof that everything can be taken from
a man but one thing:
the last of the human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude
in any given set
of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
Are you getting the results you
want?
Think about it. Having a great
attitude is not the result of having a
great life; having a great life is the result
of having a great attitude.
