Elvis fan Auctions Vast Collection to Win Back Love.
The owner of what has been called the largest private collection
of Elvis Presley memorabilia outside of Graceland held a massive
auction this weekend, in an attempt to win back his former girlfriend.
According to auction organizers, longtime Presley fan Jim Curtin
decided to sell his vast collection after his girlfriend broke
up with him, giving him an ultimatum: choose Elvis or choose her.
The Regency-Superior Auctioneers online auction, conducted on Saturday
and Sunday from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beverly Hills, put a
myriad of pieces on the block.
Lots ranged from autographed SUN and RCA Presley LPs to personal
items like one of the singer's guitars, his movie poster collection
and items of clothing and jewelry.
Highlights from the sale included two original ticket stubs to
the 1956 taping of The Ed Sullivan Show — at which Presley appeared
— and the white jumpsuit "the King" wore for his 1974
concert at Houston's Astrodome. Presley had personally presented
it to Curtin in 1975.
One concert suit offered at the auction sold for $125,000 US and
another sold for $50,000 US, while the Sullivan Show tickets sold
for $19,000 US, Alan Lipkin, the auction house's senior vice-president,
told the Associated Press.
Curtin, a Presley fan since the age of eight, had collected Elvis
ephemera for more than 30 years. He spent time with "the King" on
several occasions and presented the music icon with various gifts,
including a custom-made Gibson guitar that now hangs at Graceland.
Even before Presley's death in 1977, Curtin began working as an
impersonator. He eventually developed a minor following for his
Elvis tribute show, which he performed for more than a decade.
Curtin has also become an authority on Presley: writing books and
articles, running fan clubs and publishing calendars featuring
rare, unpublished photos from his collection.

How to Make Big Money on Antiques
Ever wondered about the value of a favorite antique? Wondered if
something you owned was a long-lost treasure worth a fortune? As
viewers of television’s “Antique Roadshow” have learned, finding
out the truth about the value of your stuff can be exhilarating.
But what can you do if you don't know the value of your family
heirlooms, and no experts are in town? Author and art expert Robert
J. Hughes says putting a value on your family treasures may be
easier than you think, and doesn’t require travel or patience.
According to Hughes, you can actually have an expert at an auction
house give you an unofficial appraisal by mail. In fact, the world's
biggest auction houses offer a free opinion of the likely value
of your property, if you think you might want to sell something
there.
“Most people are still put off by the nature of auctions,” says
Hughes, “but auctioneers are in the business of selling things,
and experts at auction houses say that people who have things to
sell -- from rugs and carpets, jewels, furniture and art, even
wine -- shouldn't feel intimidated by these places. Consider an
auction house the brick-and-mortar version of an online auctioneer
like eBay.”
"It's amazing what people do not know about the art world," says
Hughes, whose new novel, "Late and Soon," is set at an
auction house in New York City. Mr. Hughes, a reporter with the
Wall Street Journal, has covered the art market extensively and
has written about trends in art, such as the hottest artists or
collecting areas, from furniture to unassuming-yet-valuable items
such as one-of-a-kind lunchboxes.
In "Late and Soon," Mr. Hughes opens a window onto an
area where commerce and culture meet -- auctioneering.
Novelist Robert J. Hughes covers art auctions, the art world and
culture for the Wall Street Journal, and can speak on those topics
and also the many ways his novel "Late and Soon" will
appeal to people everywhere.

Government Auto Auctions: Drive Away With a Steal of a Deal.
Savvy bargain hunters find huge bargains at government auto auctions.
Thousands of cars, trucks, and SUVs are currently available on
the internet and at various auction locations thoughout the U.S.
and Canada.
Mt Holly, NJ (PRWEB) January 9, 2006 -- On October 26, 2005 in
Del Rio, Texas a government seized 2000 Mitsubishi Galant was sold
at a government auto auction for $900. A 2001 Ford E-350 van was
sold at a government auto auction for $1,800 on October 8, 2005
in Laredo, TX. A bidder at a government auto auction in Nogales,
Arizona picked up a 2005 Chevy Astro with less than 21,000 miles
for $4,000 on November 10, 2005.
Any member of the public who is a licensed driver and at least
18 years of age is eligible to bid at government auto auctions.
Registration is free. Government seized and surplus autos and other
vehicles are sold by internet auctions, live auctions, sealed bid
auctions, negotiated price, fixed price and drop-by sales.
Here are some auction tips:
1. Find a Government Auto Auction Near You - Government auto auctions
are held all over the U.S. and Canada. Information about the auction
locations, dates, times, and participation instructions can be
found at http://www.GovernmentAuctionSite.com.
2. Register to Bid - It is advised that you register to bid at
the auction location prior to the auction.
3. Inspect Your Vehicles - Attend auction previews. Previews are
your chance to inspect the cars and other vehicles.
4. Review the Auto Auction Catalog - The auction house will distribute
a catalog of available vehicles on the day of the Auction and preceding
Inspection Day
5. Calculate Your Target Price - You may want to calculate the
anticipated price for your vehicle through the use of readily available
pricing guides such as NADA or Kelly Blue Book Used Car Guides.
6. Determine Your Method of Payment - Accepted forms of payment
may include cash, credit card (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, Discover),
cashier's check.
7. Attend the Mock Auction - The auction house may conduct a brief
mock auction prior to the actual sale. If you are new to used vehicle
auctions, attend this mock auction to familiarize yourself with
the process.
Many states and federal government agencies sell surplus and seized
cars, trucks, and SUVs at government auto auctions. Each year approximately
300 government auto auctions are conducted throughout the United
States and Puerto Rico to auction property seized as a result of
violations of federal law enforced by the Department of the Treasury.
Under authority of the Internal Revenue Code, automobiles, motorcycles,
trucks, and boats that have been seized or acquired for nonpayment
of internal revenue taxes are sold at public auction.
The U.S. Government General Services Administration will auction
approximately 35,000 surplus cars and trucks this coming year.
GSA Fleet auctions surplus cars, trucks and other vehicles with
low mileage and only one previous owner. The public can acquire
well maintained Federal government vehicles at significant savings.
These vehicles have been well maintained. Vehicles are carefully
detailed before auction and come loaded with most options consumers
typically prefer.
The U.S. Marshals Service offers cars and other vehicles for auction
to the public which have been seized by federal law enforcement
agencies. More than 14,000 items of seized cars and property are
sold annually with gross sales of $200 million. Revenues are used
for law enforcement activities and for restitution to victims of
fraud.
Government auto auctions are quite different from traditional
used car sales. If you know how to bid to buy, you could drive
away with a steal of a deal. For more information on government
auto auctions visit http://www.GovernmentAuctionSite.com.
