Most auctions are held during the day, but according to an art expert and novelist, it's the evening auctions that draw social movers laden with money and ambition, as well as the biggest names in art -- Cezanne and Manet and Pollock and Matisse. It was at an evening sale just two years ago that someone paid more than $100 million for an early Picasso painting -- the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. In his new novel "Late and Soon," Robert J. Hughes gives you a front-row seat into this exhilarating world where culture and commerce meet. "Late and Soon" explores the world of big auctions through characters involved in this business, and those who work with them. It's seen mainly through the eyes of Claire, a specialist in art at Sotheby's, whose personal life is in turmoil just at the point when she's putting together a sale of paintings. everywhere. The concert, set for Jan. 14, is just one of the events that highlight a busy weekend in Portland beginning Jan. 13. On Jan. 13, the Cumberland County Civic Center doors will open at 5 p.m. for a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia from Grandstand Sports, including a 2004 Boston Red Sox team-signed jersey, a David Ortiz autographed 16-inch x 20-inch photo, a Paul Pierce-autographed official NBA basketball, a 2004 New England Patriots team-signed helmet, and a visit from an original member of the 1980 USA Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Team to watch the movie "Miracle" with the winner's friends and family. Prior to the Pirates' hockey game against the rival Providence Bruins (7:05 p.m.), a motorsports showcase of local drivers' race cars, collectibles and memorabilia presented by Bill Ryan of Oxford Plains Speedway, is scheduled to be held as well as a pre-game show sponsored by NAPA and Maine Indoor Karting and a video board presentation of the motivating and inspirational story of NASCAR driver Jerry Nadeau. The second day begins with a silent auction beginning at 2 p.m. followed by the Don Campbell Band opening for Underwood at 3 p.m. at the CCCC. Underwood recently won three Billboard Music Awards. Her current hit, "Jesus Take the Wheel," is on the Billboard chart. Tickets for the concert are $45. All funds raised by the concert will go to the Jeff Gordon Foundation. VIP tickets cost $300 includes tickets and a private meet-and-greet with Underwood. Only 100 VIP tickets will be sold. Following the concert, "The Winter Wonderland Gala with Jeff Gordon & Friends" will take place at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland at 7 p.m. This event is sold out, but tickets can be won at the concert. "It's not often that you can go to an event and help out a great cause like the Jeff Gordon Foundation," said Get-Etched.com spokesman Mike Roy. He said his company hopes to raise $500,000 for the Jeff Gordon Foundation. The dinner will feature special guest Gordon as well as "several surprises," according to Roy. Following the dinner, there will be a live auction. Established in 1999, the Jeff Gordon Foundation primarily provides support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, the Marrow Foundation in partnership with the Hendrick Marrow Program, Riley Hospital for Children and Jeff Gordon's Children Hospital at Northeast Medical Center. The foundation brings needed funds and assistance to chronically ill children and their families.
