Indian Artist Auctions Custer Items.
For most of his 76 years, Adam Fortunate Eagle of Fallon has been
collecting -- and creating -- American Indian art and artifacts.
His collection, which includes weapons associated with Col. George
A. Custer's defeat in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876,
is scheduled to be auctioned this week in San Francisco.
"It's kind of my 401(k) retirement account," said Fortunate
Eagle, whose Anglo surname is Nordwall. "My wife, Bobbie,
and I live on Social Security, and we wanted some supplemental
income. I hate to part with these things, but for us it's a way
of cashing in our bonds."
Indian memorabilia
The auction, scheduled today through Wednesday, is run by Greg
Martin Auctions of San Francisco. The sale features American firearms
and Indian artifacts, art and memorabilia.
Fortunate Eagle, an artist and activist, is well-known in the
Bay Area and beyond for his leadership and participation in the
Indian takeover of Alcatraz in 1969. He and Bobbie live on the
Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Reservation, where he still creates totem
poles, carved statues, pipes and other art.
The 138 items in the auction include firearms, artwork, beaded
clothing, baskets and other artifacts of unique provenance associated
with Native American history, culture or tradition.
Fortunate Eagle's collection comes up for sale Wednesday, the
36th anniversary of the Alcatraz occupation, and includes a peace
pipe that was smoked on the island at the time.
His collection also includes other stone pipes, drums, buckskin
war shirts and other clothing, woven baskets, totem poles, headdresses
and historic firearms.
"I guess my favorite piece is the carbine that belonged to
Curley, Custer's scout at the Little Big Horn, who was the last
of his surviving command to see him alive," Fortunate Eagle
said. "Curley's son, George Old Elk, was my adoptive father
and as part of that auction lot we're including a photo of Curley
holding the gun."
The weapon is a U.S. Springfield Model 1877 trapdoor carbine,
estimated value $8,000 to $12,000. The auction also includes a
British flintlock ($700 to $1,000) with attributed ownership to
Crow Warrior Warm Robe, a veteran of the Battle of the Little Bighorn,
a Crow hand drum ($600 to $900) also owned by Curley and a Sheffield
Bowie knife ($250 to $350) found near Custer Battlefield.
'Become heirlooms'
Also being sold are artwork made by Fortunate Eagle and Bobbie
and various Indian art and artifacts given to him as gifts over
the years.
"Many times on reservations and in Indian families items
like these are lost through indifference or end up in pawn shops
or in the trash," Fortunate Eagle said. "By selling these
things they will become heirlooms for other families and will still
be enjoyed and prized. The history will be remembered."

James Bond's Aston Martin For Sale.
Cars made for James Bond, Al Capone and Hank Williams, Jr. to
be sold at auction.
James Bond's car -- really, the James Bond car --will be going
up for auction in January. Cars custom-built for Al Capone and
Hank Williams, Jr. will also be for sale at the same event.
The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by the character James Bond in
the movies Goldfinger and Thunderball will be sold to the highest
biddder at RM Auctions' Vintage Motor Cars in Arizona to be held
in Phoenix, Ariz., on Jan. 20, 2006.
The car is one of four created for the films and for promotional
use. The car has a variety of optional equipment for both offensive
and defensive purposes. This includes a pair of .30 caliber Browning
machine guns that deploy from behind the headights (these are non-firing
props), and a wheel-mounted tire slasher. An oil-slick ejector
squirts out from the left-rear light cluster and a smoke-screen
system is located next to the car's exhaust.
The license plate revolves to display any of three different plates
and the car still has its hydraulic ramming bumpers. In the interest
of safety, the ejector seat has been replaced with a standard,
non-ejecting passenger seat. RM Auctions would not comment on the
car's estimated value.
A 1928 Cadillac built for the Chicago gangster Al Capone includes
some similar features. It, too, has a smoke screen device and it's
bullet-proof, with steel-plating reinforcing the car body and with
windows more than an inch thick. The back window folds down to
facilitate the use of firearms. The car is painted in the same
color scheme as Chicago police cars of the time and it's equipped
with a siren and flashing police lights.
The car was seized by the U.S. Treasury Department and is said
to have been used by President Franklin Roosevelt for a short time.
It's value is estimated at $250,000 to $500,000.
Hank Williams Jr.'s 1964 Pontiac Bonneville used guns in a different
sort of way. The car is decorated with 18 pistols -- 12 large ones
and six small ones -- as well as 547 silver dollars, 12 silver
horseshoes and 17 sterling silver horse heads. Inside, the center
console is fitted with a saddle. The car's estimated value is $100,000
to $200,000.

State's Abandoned Property Available In Online Auctions.
BOSTON --Property left unclaimed in safety deposit boxes goes
on sale online Monday, as Massachusetts turns to the Internet to
auction off items ranging from a Revolution-era silver mug to a
Mickey Mouse watch.
Article Tools
The state Treasurer's Office, after years of using traditional
auctions to dispose of the items, will peddle the goods -- essentially
tax free -- through online auctioneer eBay.
"eBay allows us to reach more potential bidders and ultimately
bring in more money for the state," said Alison Mitchell,
spokeswoman for Treasurer Timothy Cahill.
Proceeds go into the state's general fund. Officials hope to net "several
hundred-thousand" dollars, Mitchell said. The auctions begin
Monday and will last about three weeks.
Two big ticket items, whose appraised value was undetermined as
of Sunday, are the tankard -- or mug -- made by colonial silversmith
Andrew Tyler and salvaged from a burning home near Bunker Hill,
and a silver teapot, circa 1800.
The appraised value of the remaining 198 items is between $100,000
and $150,000, including a 49-ounce platinum bar worth about $50,000.
There are dozens of antiques, rings, pendants, and gemstones.
State law requires banks to turn over safe deposit boxes that
have not been maintained for seven years. The Treasury tries to
locate owners or heirs, and if not found the property is independently
appraised and put up for auction. Rightful owners can claim the
proceeds.
Traditional auctions required buyers to pay the state's 5 percent
sales tax to complete the transaction, but that's not required
online.
Right now, buyers are expected to pay sales taxes on Internet
purchases themselves directly to the state when they pay their
income taxes, although states rarely enforce it.
Mitchell predicts the online auctions will bring in far more than
a traditional auction, thus making up for any sales tax loss. Traditional
East Coast auction houses also charge buyers fees between 15 and
19 percent.
Sue A. Giffen, owner of Falmouth-based Cape Cod Auction, said
traditional live auctions are "more competitive" than
Internet auctions.
"But the fact is an online auction has a wider audience," Giffen
said.
A combination -- live online auctions -- is the best, she said.
"It's a broader market and it's still competitive," she
said.
Cahill's office is hosting a viewing of the items from noon to
5 p.m. Monday at the Statehouse. Bids must be made through eBay.
Colorado, Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Kentucky similarly use
the San Jose, Calif.-based eBay.
A traditional auction in 2002 netted between $100,000 and $150,000,
Mitchell said.

Police Use Web For Auctions.
Made in China. Stolen in Fort Lauderdale. And Lauderhill. And
Coral Springs.
The booty of South Florida crime victims is for sale on the Internet,
on a Web site called propertyroom.com.
At least, that's what the Web site is called for those who want
to take advantage of someone else's suffering. For the victims,
the people who want their stolen jewelry and goods returned, the
site can be accessed at stealitback.com.
The site specializes in helping police departments dispose of
unclaimed property.
"Somebody may lose a purse and it may have a cell phone in
it, or someone may lose a briefcase and it may have a computer
in it," said Michael Rigg, property room supervisor for the
Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
If a pair of jeans is used as evidence in a court case, they're
set free on the Web site 90 days after the case is over.
The departments end up with hordes of goods. A prolific purse
snatcher, for example, might get busted one day, and the arresting
agency is left with the watches, jewels, cell phones, Diana Ross
Christmas Music CD (first bid: $1) and maybe a few fancy pens.
Gauging from the Internet offerings, chemical-biological gas masks
appear to be a popular leftover for police agencies (starting at
$10), as are glow sticks ($2.25 for 100 of them) and mysterious
looking silver briefcases ($5).
Fort Lauderdale officials have decided crime pays a much higher
return when they use propertyroom.com for auctioning unclaimed
goods. The city decided in January to drop the old method of live
auctions, contracting for another year with the Web site.
Rigg said live auctions are still used for cars.
Fort Lauderdale has lots of local company. The client list, according
to CEO Thomas Lane, includes the Broward Sheriff's Office, Boynton
Beach, Coral Springs, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Lauderhill,
Lighthouse Point, Miramar, North Bay Village, North Palm Beach,
Pembroke Pines, Plantation and South Miami.
"Most of us are short on space and it frees up our space," Rigg
said.
The Web site could be dangerous for impulse shoppers. Could they
possibly log off without bidding on the pink gurney? The collection
of disposable lighters? The wedding and engagement rings somehow
detached from their rightful owners?
In Fort Lauderdale's case, the city gets half the payoff when
an item sells. In the first year the service was used by Fort Lauderdale's
Police Department, the city earned $9,759, according to a December
memo from police officials to the city manager. Compare that to
the live spring auctions of 2002, which generated $7,600 total.
BSO spokesman Jim Leljedal said the Web site, similar to eBay
but with a police bent, is more "effective and easier" than
live auctions.
Anyone who can prove the items on the Web site belong to them
can retrieve them, according to the stealitback.com rules. But
Lane said that doesn't happen very often.
The California-based company is opening a warehouse in Orlando
in two weeks, to expand service in Florida and allow buyers to
pick items up to avoid shipping.
What's the weirdest item they've sold?
"Everybody asks that question," said Lane. "Police
departments are very conservative. We're not gonna get those weird
things. Those kind of things are going to be destroyed."

Chamillionaire Auctions Day On eBay.
With his major-label debut The Sound Of Revenge set for release
on Universal Records, Chamillionaire is offering a fan a chance
to spend his debut album release day with him.
Universal Records, in conjunction with eBay, is offering the auction
winner and one (1) guest to accompany Chamillionaire as he promotes
his new CD across the city of Houston, Texas.
The promotional events include a brief lunch with Chamillionaire
on 11/21/05, as well as, escorting the Houston native to several
in-store signings on 11/21/05 and 11/22/05.
The winner will also help Chamillionaire celebrate The Sound Of
Revenge at his album release party at a surprise location on 11/22/05.
An ex-member of Houston's legendary Swishahouse, Chamillionaire
and former friend Paul Wall, started a group known as the Color
Changin Click.
Their first album, Get Ya Mind Correct, was nominated for Indie
Album of the Year in The Source Magazine.
The acclaimed release went on to sell over 100,000 copies independently.
Known as the Mixtape Messiah, Chamillionaire recently made national
news when he remixed his Scott Storch produced single, gTurn It
Uph to pay homage to the Astros and their first World Series appearance.
The remix, "Turn It Up Astros," was quickly placed into
heavy rotation at the Astrodome and became a top requested song
in Houston.
The Sound Of Revenge features Bun B, Scarface, Lil' Wayne, Lil'
Flip, and Krayzie Bone, with production from Mannie Fresh and Cool & Dre
among others.

What You Make it
You can speculate and guess and theorize and envision, and all
those things have their place. Yet you will not know for sure what
you can and cannot do until you step forward and make the effort.
There are many things that might go wrong, and many obstacles you
likely did not anticipate. Yet you must not allow the possibility
of those problems to stop you before you even get started.
When something comes up that you didn't plan for, you can learn
from it and make adjustments. When a difficult challenge arises,
that challenge brings with it the opportunity for even greater
value when you choose to persevere.
Everything that is easy and guaranteed to succeed has already
been done. Real accomplishment comes from doing the things that
no one else thinks you can do.
Lift your eyes up and see the objective at the end of the path.
Then lift your feet up, one after the other, and take the first
few steps along that path.
Accomplishment is not what is reasonable or practical or certain
or without controversy. Accomplishment is precisely what you decide
to make it.
