Auction News
Luxury Auctions Are New Trend in High-End Real Estate.
Steven and Alma Funke of Castle Point Estates announced plans
to hold a luxury real estate auction for two of Hawaii's newest,
most elegant properties on Oahu's exclusive Kailua Beach. Four
properties will be auctioned in all Tuesday morning, November 15th
beachfront at Castle Point on Kailua Bay.
According to a recent issue of Castles Magazine, using auctions
to sell high-end properties is gaining momentum. In a market where
the turn around on high-end, multi-million dollar estates may be
more than a year, the same properties sold at auction guarantee
true market value and sell in a matter of hours.
Steven Funke of Castle Point Estates agrees. "We believe
selling the Castle Point homes at auction is the right way to go." Steven
added, "These homes are works of art situated on one of the
best beaches in the world. Such rare jewels do not become available
often."
The evening before the auction, Monday November 14th, the Funke's
are hosting the Castle Point Benefit Gala featuring a private concert
with Grammy-winning artist Roberta Flack. Alma Funke describes
The Castle Point Benefit Gala as part of their plan to help those
in greatest need. "The gala is an opportunity to bring people
together who have the means to help others. In this unprecedented
time of catastrophic disasters, it is important we all do what
we can."
The Castle Point Benefit Gala will aid charities that are reaching
out to poor, displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina, and the recent
deadly earthquake in Pakistan, as well as underprivileged, at-risk
youth populations of Hawaii.

Sports Legend Teams Up With PETA, Sets Opening Bid at $20,000.
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova\who has won nine Wimbledon Womenfs
Singles championships and, with a record 167 titles in singles
and 174 in doubles, holds more overall tennis titles than any other
player in history\wants to ace one for animals who are abused,
neglected, or in dire need of rescue. Martina is teaming up with
her longtime pals at PETA and offering a one-hour tennis lesson
and a vegan lunch to the highest bidder on PETAfs online auction,
with proceeds to be earmarked for PETAfs Investigations & Rescue
Fund (IRF).
Bidding has started at $20,000, and the winner will be able schedule
the lesson and lunch at a mutually agreed upon time and place within
six months of the closing date of the auction. The winner will
be responsible for his or her transportation costs to and from
the lesson and lunch.
The IRF enables PETAfs staff to provide lifesaving resources 365
days a year, around the clock, whether itfs dispatching an investigator
to a factory farm following a call from a whistleblower, helping
a chained dog who is left all alone, or sending a team of animal
rescue workers to areas hit by disasters, as was the case in Louisiana
in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. PETA receives more than 10,000
calls a year from people who ask for help to get animals out of
harmfs way. The IRF also underwrites PETAfs groundbreaking investigations
of cruelty to animals wherever it exists, including in laboratories,
factory farms, slaughterhouses, puppy mills, pet stores, and circuses.
It is also the primary source of funding for PETAfs mobile spay
and neuter clinic, where more than 7,000 surgeries were performed
in the last year alone.
This isnft the first time that Martina has teamed up with PETA
to help animals. She has hosted a donated fur-coat giveaway for
the needy in Colorado, starred in a pro-vegetarian ad that launched
PETAfs "Live and Let Live" Campaign, and called on Australiafs
prime minister to ban lamb mutilations and live-sheep exports by
the Australian wool industry. For her outstanding efforts to help
stop animal suffering, Martina received a special award at PETAfs
25th Anniversary Gala last month.
"Animals donft deserve to be abused, neglected, or abandoned," says
Martina. "Ifm happy to be able to pitch in and give this tennis
lesson in the hope that people will learn the bigger lesson that
animals deserve to be treated with respect and kindness."

State Stops Selling Fake Goods At Surplus Auctions.
State officials have halted a policy of selling counterfeit goods
at surplus property auctions after federal customs agents said
the practice was illegal.
The state routinely auctions off items seized by law enforcement
agents as part of criminal investigations and by Department of
Revenue officials to pay off back taxes. The auctions generated
$23 million for the state in the fiscal year ended June 30.
But those auctions have sometimes included goods like fake Rolex
watches or designer handbags, which were advertised as imitation.
Questions about the practice by NBC-17 prompted U.S. Customs and
Immigration Enforcement agents to call the practice of knowingly
selling counterfeit goods illegal because the state never obtained
permission from Rolex or other trademark holders.
The questions also led to a new policy by the state banning the
sale of counterfeit goods.
"I put it out to my employees verbally (Tuesday) and in writing
(Wednesday) morning that we would no longer be bidding counterfeit
or imitation items, that we know," surplus property officer
Randy Lee said.
Officials pulled several counterfeit items off the surplus auction
Web site on Wednesday.
State Department of Revenue officials declined to talk with NBC-17
about the imitation goods and whether the state had broken any
laws or had sought trademark permission to sell them.
Department spokeswoman Kim Brooks released a statement, saying
only that officials requested the auctions stop including counterfeit
items immediately.
"The department has always been forthright in its dealings
with taxpayers who purchase items through these sales and notifies
bidders of the item's condition, including any damage," the
statement said. "The department has requested that the state
surplus immediately cease selling jewelry seized by the department
that has been determined to be counterfeit."

UKfs eBid auction site launches U.S. version
With a different deal for sellers and new payment options for
buyers, London-based eBid Ltd.fs eBid.net launched its U.S. version
this week and expects to quickly build a major presence in here
in the online auction market, CEO Gary Sewell says. gWithin six
months, we hope to surpass Overstock Auctions,h he tells InternetRetailer.com.
EBid started in the UK in 1999, when Sewell and his partners decided
to replicate what eBay had started in the U.S. But when Yahoo closed
its UK auction business in 2002, eBid changed its operating model
to eliminate listing fees | copying what had been Yahoofs model.
Yahoo sellers were used to not paying fees, so we dropped our listing
fees and ex-Yahoo users came to our site,h Sewell says.
EBidfs fee structure has helped it grow to more than 200,000 auctions
daily in the UK, and it expects to reach 500,000 auctions within
the first year in the U.S., Sewell says. EBid gets about 25,000
unique visitors per day in the UK, where it processes about 250,000
page impressions per day, he adds. Although eBid began piloting
its U.S. site several weeks ago, it has yet to release any traffic
figures.
While eBid charges no listing fees, it charges a 2% final value
fee based on an auctionfs final selling price. It also offers sellers
the option of paying an annual membership fee of $79.99 in lieu
of paying final value fees. By comparison, eBay charges listing
fees ranging from 25 cents to $4.80, plus other fees including
a final value fee starting at about 5%. In its recent third-quarter
report, eBay said it had 68 million active users, including buyers
and sellers, over the previous 12 months.
EBidfs payment system, PPPay.com provides a service similar to
eBayfs PayPal, which accepts payments from auction buyers through
credit cards or other vehicles and then pays the seller. Under
this arrangement, buyers receive their goods after the seller has
received payment.
But PPPay.com also offers an escrow service, which doesnft release
a buyerfs funds to the seller until after the buyer receives what
she ordered. The buyer has 24 hours to approve the received goods
and instruct PPPay.com to issue the payment. If a buyer doesnft
contact PPPay.com within 24 hours, PPPay.com proceeds with the
payment.
Sewell is promoting eBid in the U.S. through a search engine marketing
campaign that includes 20,000 keywords in Google and 5,000 in Yahoo,
but eBid also expects to grow through word-of-mouth and a registration
incentive program, he says. Under the incentive program, users
who get friends to register on eBid receive credits that can be
used to bid on auctions.
