Auction News

The West of England, Great Britain's Major Antiques Resource Area.

The West of England is home to hundreds of quality antiques businesses, including specialist dealers, antique fairs and over sixty auction houses.

Research has found that the West of England has possibly the largest antiques resources in Great Britain. Taking the City of Bath, which has it's own very active antique dealers association, as a central point the area stretches for about 80 miles in all directions. Within about two hours or so, buyers have at their disposal what is possibly the most concentrated and varied source of quality antiques services that Britain has to offer and presenting them with little, if any need to venture beyond itfs parameters.
For example, the Cotswolds, which apart from it's outstanding natural beauty is home to dozens of reputable antiques specialists in the beautiful towns of Tetbury, Stow on the Wold, Moreton in Marsh, Chipping Camden, and Burford to name just a few.

Similarly, in a southerly direction is the small market town of Honiton, Devon where the visitor will find a varied selection of no less than 29 antique dealers, with many others to be found in nearby villages, thereby extending the region southerly past Exeter and south easterly into Dorset.

Easterly and still within easy reach, buyers will find a further extensive selection of quality antiques in the picturesque town of Hungerford. With two antique centres together with fifteen other general and specialist dealers, not forgetting a regular fair, the town is perhaps one of the best-kept antiques secrets in the UK!

Whereas westerly throughout South Wales, produces some fine Welsh antique furniture including dressers and decorative items from various specialist dealers and several auction rooms including a weekly Sunday sale near Newport. The area extends as far as the tiny Welsh border town of Hay on Wye, renowned for itfs seemingly endless supply of 39 antiquarian book shops and the annual Hay Literary Festival which attracts 80,000 worldwide visitors.

The West of England also abounds with some excellent antique fairs, notably at the Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, which is central to the region. The Showground is home to a very large fair on weekends six times a year by one organiser, and a regular Flea Market by another. There is also a very large fair held five times a year at West Point Exhibition Centre near Exeter with a capacity of up to 500 exhibitors, and a monthly fair on Sunday's at Malvern Showground, which is less than two hours drive away in the north of the area. There are in addition many more good quality fairs, some specialist, held throughout the region, mostly at weekends. Similarly, several dealer associations host their own events throughout the year, for example BABAADA, the Bath & Bradford on Avon Antique Dealers Association in Bath during March. LAPADA, the Association of Art & Antique Dealers at Cheltenham Racecourse in October and CADA, the Cotswold Antique Dealers Association, 'Members Exhibitions' during the same month.

Also of significant importance to the West of England antiques trade is the central location of Bristol International Airport which is served by direct daily flights to and from the USA (New York) and Switzerland (Geneva), respectively the largest *importers of British antiques and fine art. Indeed, where time is of the essence for the professional foreign buyer it would be quite possible, with the close location of some sources, that buyers could certainly get down to business within an hour or so of collecting their baggage from the aircraft.

Escala Group Acquires Greg Martin Auctions, One of the World's Premier Auction Houses in Arms & Armor.

Escala Group announced today that it has acquired the outstanding shares of Greg Martin Auctions (GMA), a specialty auction house based in San Francisco that features antique arms, armor, militaria and historical memorabilia with a focus on Western and Native American artifacts. For Escala Group's fiscal year ending June 30, 2006, it is projected that Greg Martin Auctions will add approximately $15 million in aggregate sales (hammer price plus buyer's premium) to the Company's overall aggregate sales.

Greg Martin Auctions was founded in January 2002 by three former executives of Butterfield's Auctioneers, including Greg Martin, a director and consultant, Bernard Osher, Butterfield's former owner, and John Gallo, its former president. Together in 1986 these three started the Arms Department at Butterfield's and built it into one of the world's largest, with total sales through 2001 of over $200 million in their specialty areas. As a result of the 1999 sale of Butterfield's to eBay, in 2002 Messrs. Martin, Gallo and Osher, then free to pursue new opportunities, founded Greg Martin Auctions and brought their unparalleled collective wealth of knowledge and experience to this new auction house. GMA has quickly risen to the forefront of auction houses specializing in arms and armor, and today is also the officially recognized auction house of the National Rifle Association. Greg Martin is considered to be one of the world's premier experts in his field, having sold many of the finest available antique firearms at auction over the past 19 years. Further information on the company is available online at http://www.gregmartinauctions.com.

Jose Miguel Herrero, CEO and President of Escala Group, stated, "This acquisition exemplifies the opportunities that we believe Escala can uncover outside of our main areas of expertise, rare stamps and coins. By identifying the finest auction houses in niche collectibles, we will continue to add quality companies with significant market shares, proven track records and superior management teams to Escala Group."

Greg Martin Auctions will hold its first auction as an Escala Group company on November 14 - November 16, 2005. The auction will be conducted in San Francisco and simulcast in New York City. The sale will consist of fine antique and collectible arms and sporting guns as well as a Remington collection and an estate arms collection. The auction is expected to bring over $5 million in sales.

Greg Manning, 1st Vice Chairman of Escala Group, commented, "We have known John Gallo for many years and recognized the unique opportunity that the acquisition of Greg Martin Auctions presented for Escala Group. Upon its launch, GMA immediately became considered by many collectors and dealers to be the premier auction house in its field. John Gallo and I have collaborated on auctions in the past during his tenure at Butterfield's, and it will be a pleasure to have Greg Martin Auctions join Escala Group, further building upon the foundation already established over the years."

The purchase price was approximately $3.5 million, payable in cash and notes. Greg Martin Auctions will be the inaugural company in Escala Group's new collectibles division "Arts and Antiques," created to complement the existing philatelic and numismatic divisions in the United States, Europe and Asia. Greg Martin will continue to act as President of Greg Martin Auctions, and John Gallo will remain with the company on a consulting basis.

Mr. Martin stated, "The partners at GMA decided that in order to take our business to a higher level, we needed to be affiliated with a strong collectibles-based company. Escala Group, with its blue-chip operating companies, impeccable reputation, market expertise and global reach was our first choice. John Gallo and I look forward to the future and the continuing challenge of expanding our business into new complementary collectibles at the highest level possible with the world's finest auction catalogues."

Collectorfs Estate Auction Holds Much of Local Clevelandfs History.

On Saturday November 12th, the small town of Wellington, OH will witness another fascinating auction opportunity. Antiques and Estate Auctioneers, will host Larry Southworthfs incredible estate auction. John Farkas and Connie Rose are your host auctioneers. An insurance salesman who had a passion for auctions and possessed enviable skill in carpentry, he built his home incorporating antiques and architectural pieces from local Clevelandfs history. His oldest son remembers that auction going was scheduled into every trip the family took, in the smallest to the largest of places, resulting in an eclectic collection of surprising proportion.

It was not from auctions alone though that the bulk of Larryfs collection accumulated. He was a pioneer at heart\departing from the tourist group during a trip to China; Southworth went with guides deeper into the remote parts of the country. There he came across a small town that makes silk rugs, each rug taking years to complete. For $14,000 he bought one of these rugs, nearly twenty by thirty feet, and brought it back to the U.S. This rug, in the company of a Gorgar pinball machine, Euclid Beach memorabilia, a horse drawn sleigh, Capodimonte clowns, railroad memorabilia, cranberry glass and Fiesta Ware will be available in the auction.

gWho wants to bid on everything else?h was the closing phrase that son, Jeff Southworth, remembers hearing at the many auctions he attended with his father. All else that did not sell individually was what Southworth would buy. Then with bolt cutters and sledgehammers in hand, father and sons would disassemble and relocate the architecture of stairwells, a bar, and an entire restaurant. An impressive example is Clevelandfs Kon Tiki restaurant, housed in the down town Sheraton Hotel. In four, 40ft. trailers he stored the wall, ceiling, and floor decorations until they could be refigured into the architecture of his home
Another famous Cleveland haunt, The Clip-Joint Bar, was similarly acquired. The Clip-Joint was a barber shop where customers were also served drinks. Southworth acquired the full decor for his wife who was a Cosmetologist and a teacher of Cosmetology, and as with the Kon Tiki the architecture of the retired bar was adapted to his home.

Southworthfs friend Barbara Sindelar remembers, gHe wanted his house to be a collection of all the pieces that establish our past, thatfs what antiques do, they link the past with the present. He wanted his Indian one armed bandit to greet you at the door on the right, and the old nickelodeon player piano to greet you on the left.h

Both items will be included in the auction November 12.
Southworth collected an amazing amount of items over his lifetime. His son recalls the family 4-car garage that one could never park a car in. Larry was fascinated by the history of each item, and loved to relate their tale with the ease of a storyteller. As an insurance salesman he was drawn to the stories of Fire Marks\these were an old form of fire insurance where if you hadnft purchased a Fire Mark and your house caught on fire, well the fire brigade just wouldnft show up. He collected many of these and was also a member of the Fire Marks Association. He collected Cigarette tins, Fire Mark tins, salesman samples, slot machines, old carnival and fun house items, and Desert Rose place settings, an eclectic collection indeed.

It would only reason to hold an auction in his honor. His highly intriguing, varied, and outstanding lifetime dedication to collecting is bound to hold many treasures for others. The Antiques and Estate Auctioneers will make this auction easy and convenient to attend in a spacious gallery with a large digital screen display, or live-internet bidding available straight from your own home. Do not miss this rare opportunity to participate in Clevelandfs history.

CHRISTIEfS NEW YORK OFFERS PART THREE OF THE FORBEfS COLLECTION OF AMERICAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS.

Following the highly successful sales of The Forbes Collection of American Historical Documents, Part One and Two staged in 2002, Christiefs is pleased to offer Part Three on November 15. Primarily focused on Presidential letters and manuscripts, this third installment is expected to fetch between $4 | $6 million. The documents offered continue to stand as a testament to the late Malcolm Forbesf passion for collecting and his exquisite eye for important Americana.

One of the principal lots offered this season is the most significant document in Abraham Lincolnfs presidency, the Emancipation Proclamation (Philadelphia: Frederick Leypoldt, June 6, 1864) (estimate: $650,000 | $850,000). The Proclamation has become one of the fundamental charters in American history, paving the way as it did for the 13th Amendment and the permanent abolition of slavery in the United States. The oversize document, signed by both President Lincoln and Secretary of State, William H. Seward, was printed in limited edition by two Philadelphia abolitionists who were dedicated to the cause of the Union. It is only one of approximately 15 surviving copies, most of which are in permanent public collections. In the last 40 years, only three copies have been offered at auction and the appearance of the Forbes copy will be a cause of great excitement in the community of manuscript collectors.

Along with Lincoln, many other major Civil War figures are represented in the sale, such as U. S. Grant, Robert E. Lee and most notably Julia Ward Howe, the poet and abolitionist who composed gThe Battle Hymn of the Republic.h The sale includes Howefs original draft of that work (including a discarded stanza), which she composed in the night and early dawn of 18-19 November 1861 following a tour of Union army camps ($300,000 - $500,000). Howe was inspired by a wish to make some kind of direct and meaningful contribution to the Union war effort. She succeeded famously. Once her verses were published in the Atlantic Monthly and widely distributed as sheet music, her stirring words became the anthem of the Union cause and remain to this day the best known American hymn.

Malcolm Forbes had a perceptive eye for personal and revealing documents and correspondence, and several examples are represented in the sale, such as a grief-stricken Robert E. Lee writing to his son about the death of his most trusted and valued subordinate, Stonewall Jackson (estimate: $100,000 | $150,000). Ulysses S. Grantfs March 1865 letter to George Meade shows the tense state of the Union commanderfs mind on the eve of victory (estimate: $18,000 | $25,000). A 1967 letter from then governor Ronald Reagan has the future president explaining his decision to approve Californiafs liberal abortion bill (estimate: $3,000 - $5,000). A particularly dramatic example is Theodore Rooseveltfs typescript of a speech he gave in Milwaukee in 1912. Before he could deliver it, a deranged bartender shot him, the bullet piercing the speech text in T. R.fs vest pocket. Fortunately for Roosevelt, the bullet was deflected by the paper and a metal spectacle case, preventing a fatal wound, but it lodged in his chest nevertheless. Instead of rushing to the hospital, Roosevelt proceeded to the auditorium to give his address and while holding up the typed manuscript with the bullet hole, ad-libbed, gIt takes more than that to kill a bull moose!h (estimate: $6,000 | $9,000).

The sale also includes a map of the Pacific Ocean and Japan carried by the crew of the Enola Gay on their bomb mission to Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. The map shows the planefs flight path drawn from Tinian Island to Hiroshima and back (estimate: $45,000 - $75,000). Other highlights include drafts and reading copies of important speeches by John F. Kennedy and Dwight Eisenhower, such as Ikefs address to the nation during the Suez crisis of October 1956, and Kennedyfs speech about Nikita Khrushchevfs visit in 1959 when he said, gIt is better that we meet at the summit than at the brink.h Beginning with King James IIfs appointment of Governor Edmund Andros and ending with President George H. W. Bushfs signed announcement of the start of Operation Desert Storm in Iraq in 1991, Part Three of the Forbes Collection will be every bit as comprehensive and exciting as its predecessors.

Around the auctions: Trip Down Memory Lane.

FANCY buying a little bit of history? Then get along to Wilson's at Mallusk later next week.

For you will find an exciting collection of paintings due to come under the hammer. The works by many prominent Northern Ireland artists are being sold by the Ulster Arts Club, home to quite a few of them over the years.

"This is an interesting collection of work with something for everyone," Wilson's Land and Property manager Richard Bell tells me.

"It encapsulates a trip down memory lane with many views of Belfast by various artists.

"We have the Lisburn Rd depicted by Raymond Piper, The Bog Meadows by Lawson Burch, the Gas Works by Colin Middleton, McGlade's Bar by Rowel Friers and Sandy Row by John Bannon.

"Prominent figures from the arts scene are also portrayed including Havelock Nelson and John Frazer. Photographic images of Joe McPartland and Louis Rolston and a portrait of JG Devlin are also included in the sale.

For theatrical enthusiasts there are six framed posters designed for the Abbey theatre by Gerard Dillon, George Campbell and John Behan.

A large national theatre poster for The Playboy of The Western World will also be sold as well as 10 signed prints by well known Northern Ireland artists including Basil Blackshaw and Neil Shawcross.

The Positive Club

Interruption

When you find yourself beginning to feel overwhelmed by negativity, you can always choose to break the pattern. Stop whatever you are doing, and for three of four minutes focus your mind on thoughts of gratitude, acceptance and peacefulness.

Breathe deeply, and relax the muscles throughout your body. Reflect on how very fortunate you are to be alive and aware in this universe that's overflowing with positive possibilities.

Give yourself a peaceful break. Give your spirit the opportunity of resetting to a more positive perspective, and it will.

In a few short moments, you can easily and naturally break free of any negative pattern in which you may have been caught. You'll be vastly better positioned to effectively respond to whatever life sends your way.

Instead of acting out of anger or frustration, fear or anxiety, you'll be able to choose your actions based on your own positive purpose. Instead of being caught up in the grip of negativity, you'll be calmly and firmly in control.

When the negativity starts to get overwhelming, choose to interrupt it with a positive, peaceful break. You'll find it can make a profound and positive difference.
