Auction News

State Selling Surplus Online.

The New York State Office of General Services is selling its surplus property on eBay.

Officials weren't sure at first if bidders would respond, but the auctions have become increasingly popular over the years.

Now the Office of General Services uses the online auction to sell at least 90 percent of the state's surplus property, including items like computers, vintage cars and racing sailboats.

The OGS online auction revenues have jumped every year, with the state taking in about $1 million last year and $2.7 million overall since 2002.

In contrast, OGS officials said the state's best live auction year only brought in $300,000.

BONHAMS AUCTION 12.11.05. USA

The latest from Bonhams in the USA, who have a selection of classic bikes for sale this November, over in Los Angeles;

Bonhams & Butterfields' Third Annual Collectors' Motorbikes Auction Set for November 12 in LA

Sale to be held at the Petersen Automotive Museum

Auction to be held in conjunction with Love Ride 22

Bonhams & Butterfields is fueling up for what should prove to be another exciting offering of Collectors' Motorbikes and Cycling Memorabilia at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 12, 2005.

This year's auction, held during LA's Love Ride 22 weekend, will feature a number of rare and vintage machines. Consignments are currently being accepted, but highlights of the 2005 sale include a vintage early 20th century machine in original condition and bikes from noted private collections.

A 1913 Flying Merkel, 750CC, twin cylinder is expected to bring as much as $125,000 in November. Recently discovered after 70-years of storage, the 1913 Flying Merkel retains much of its original orange finish, and still displays its period New York State registration number hand-lettered on the rear fender. There are few original survivors of this scarce marque and this year's sale brings collectors and institutions a rare opportunity to acquire a high quality v-twin motorcycle in running condition, eligible for touring in the pre-sixteen class.

Also to be featured are bikes from the late Bob Schanz collection which includes five Brough Superiors. Among these is a 1937 SS-100 -- the most coveted model of all Broughs, this bike expected to fetch more than $100,000. Also in the collection are three Matchless Silver Hawks -- one of which, a 1933 model estimated to bring $20,000 to $25,000, was formerly the property of actor and legendary motorcycle icon Steve McQueen.

Bonhams & Butterfields' Motoring Dept is pleased to offer a Munch Mammoth with graphics signed by Von Dutch in the November sale and the collecting community can anticipate a number of additional rare and desirable machines will be featured on the Bonhams & Butterfields' auction block - details to be announced over the coming weeks.

Last year was Bonhams & Butterfields' second LA motorbike's auction, but the first sale conducted in coordination with Love Ride 21, the largest single-day motorcycle event in the world. Several lots were offered with proceeds benefiting the Love Ride 21 Foundation's charities. Prices were strong and bidding unrelenting for the rarest examples of biking history.

The 2004 sale totaled nearly $530,000 for rare and collectible bikes dating from early makes of 1912 and the 1930s through modern models produced more recently. Classic examples of Indian, Harley, Ducati and other bikes were sold and the auction opened with multiple lots of memorabilia including celebrity-signed Harley-Davidson gas tanks from the now-closed Harley-Davison CafeL, each autographed by sports figures and Hollywood celebrities. Posters, cycling collectibles and furniture custom designed by Motoration Cycle DeLcor were appreciated by the standing-room-only crowd.

Information on the 2005 offering will be posted online at www.bonhams.com/us in the weeks preceding the sale. Previews will open onsite at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles on November 18 - 20.

The Positive Club

Judgment And Understanding

On occasion, it is useful and necessary to make judgments about what other people do and say. Much of the time, though, it can be a waste of your time and energy.
In fact, one of the biggest obstacles to effective listening is the habit of continually and immediately making judgments about what is being said. When the mind is so preoccupied with judging and criticizing, it has no space left for learning and understanding.

Different people have different approaches to life and different opinions. In that diversity there is much value.

Yet when you are too quick to pass judgment, you can miss much of that value. When you become too focused on showing how clever you are or proving your point, you can pass up the opportunity to gain real wisdom.

Certainly it is appropriate and wise that you exercise judgment to prevent others from harming you or taking advantage of you. Remember, though, to balance that judgment with understanding and acceptance.

Relax your judgment and you'll increase your awareness. The more often you practice acceptance, the more wisdom and understanding you'll gain.

-- Ralph Marston
