Auction News
D.C. Cancels Auto
Auction.
WASHINGTON -- D.C.'s monthly auction of abandoned vehicles is canceled.
The auctions are normally held on the third Tuesday of each month, but the D.C.
Department of Public Works has decided to skip August because of problems at
another city agency.
Services at the main office of the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles have been
disrupted by air conditioning problems and the move to a new headquarters in
Southwest.
The DMV said it has "frozen the clock" on handling disputed tickets until Aug.
21.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Public Works said cancellation of the auction
at Blue Plains is the department's way of complying with the DMV's decision to
stop the clock on collection procedures.
The next vehicle auction is now scheduled for Sept. 16.

eBay Novel Charecter
Auctions.
In the technological age, it seems that the internet is dictating the way business
and pleasure are conducted. Nowadays, one can buy just about anything from
electronic retailers, from groceries, to Jerry Garciafs ashes, to mail-order
Russian brides.
However, some are using the power of internet commerce to spread charity and
good will toward all men. Among the 16 best selling authors who have joined
forces with the Californian freedom of information and expression charity First
Amendment Project are Stephen King, John Grisham and Amy Tan. The concept is
to raise between $40,000 and $50,000 on eBay by auctioning character roles
for their future books. The winners of the bids will be monumentalized forever
in print by having the novelfs characters named after them.
Stephen King is currently auctioning a character from a future novel titled
gCELL,h which wonft be published until 2006 or 2007. The author of Pet Cemetery,
It, and Carrie amongst many others, Stephen King is best known for his tales
of horror. Cell is no exception. In the novel, zombies are awakened and driven
into kill mode by bad cell phone signals. King noted that if bidders want their
character to die in the book then they must have a female name.
John Grisham commented on the enterprise by noting that his available character
would be portrayed, gin a good light.h

Bidding Up That
Rosy Glow From The Past.
There is nothing so contemporary as nostalgia and those experts in old artefacts,
the auction houses, have been quick to cash in on the current obsession with
the past, in particular the recent past. Christie's South Kensington expects
a full house for its auction of vintage film posters on September 11. To make
things easier for the growing band of collectors of these still modestly priced
memories the auction is to be held on a Sunday.
Since South Ken introduced Sunday sales earlier this year they have performed
unevenly, with packed rooms for hot collectables, such as Clarice Cliff ceramics,
but less interest in traditional sectors, such as model cars. With vintage
posters Christie's can hardly fail. Since it launched specialist auctions 10
years ago, a buoyant market has emerged, with, on average, 90 per cent of the
lots finding new homes.
Film posters have a particular appeal - their images are often striking; they
cover every emotion, from terror to escapist comedy; they offer reminders of
happy days at the cinema; and they come in every price range, from 10 for
an advertisement of last year's big hit to the $455,000 paid in the US in 1997
for a poster of the 1930's horror movie The Mummy.
This was in excellent condition, a key factor in pricing posters: the record
price winkled out another Mummy but because this poster was less pristine it
only managed to make 80,750. Along with condition, rarity is the other decisive
influence on value. In the 1930s cinema managers were expected to return the
advertisements for pulping after the run of a film: obviously some held on
to the posters, but just how many copies survive of the most desirable films
only time discloses.
At one stage, film poster auctions were the happy hunting ground of dealers,
but collectors quickly realised that by buying wholesale they could secure
posters for around half the retail price. The trade is flourishing and the
auction on September 11 is Christie's largest ever, with more than 400 lots.
Traditionally the greatest interest in film posters, and the highest prices,
were found in the US, but now the UK is drawing level, and American buying
will feature heavily in South Kensington.
Naturally, with such mass produced objects, old favourites turn up regularly.
The James Bond films, for example, have a large and loyal following, although
only posters featuring Sean Connery fetch high prices - single posters for
the films starring Roger Moore as 007 invariably fail to reach the saleroom's
price bar of 200 a lot and are sold in groups. Even with Connery there is
a fixed pecking order. A poster for Dr. No, the first film in the series, is
on offer with a 2,000-3,000 estimate, and From Russia with Love and Goldfinger
are also expected to top 2,000, but the later films, where more posters are
likely to have survived, such as You Only Live Twice, fall into the 300-500
price range. Ten years ago a Dr. No poster could have been acquired for 200-300.
Collectors go for genres, with the horror movies produced by Universal Studios
in the 1930s commanding the top prices; and for stars Marlene Dietrich has
popular appeal and the most expensive lot at Christie's is a larger than life
poster of her 1931 movie Blonde Venus. It was designed for the Austrian market,
which reduces its appeal slightly, but the vampish image is so striking it
could well make 20,000. The fact that it is so rare - only one other has appeared
at auction - also helps. Even rarer is a US three-sheet poster for Charlie
Chaplin's 1936 classic Modern Times. This is its debut at auction and it carries
an estimate of up to 15,000. Christie's also expects around 8,000 for a US
half sheet for Orson Welles's War of the Worlds.
There are fashions in film poster collecting. A few years ago momentous movies
such as Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz carried all before them. Now
demand for the box office triumphs of the distant past seems to be satisfied
and it is posters of more recent classics which set the pace: a poster for
Lawrence of Arabia recently sold for 11,000 and Breakfast at Tiffany's has
topped the 3,000 mark. As dealer Terry Norman, owner of the Reel Picture Gallery
in Westbourne Grove, says, "My most constant request runs along the lines of,
'Have you a poster for The Graduate. It's the first film I saw with my husband.'"
Norman detects some slowing of interest for run-of-the-mill posters, but demand
for Bond and for posters featuring charismatic stars such as Michael Caine,
Steve McQueen and Audrey Hepburn keeps mounting. The business has been greatly
affected, for good or ill, by trading on the internet, especially through eBay.
Supply has multiplied, with quite rare posters suddenly emerging, but there
are many copies, often unknowingly offered, making this a treacherous marketplace.
If buyers are not hooked on films they could turn up at Christie's a few days
later, on September 14, when the auction house holds its third travel poster
sale of the year, which also includes some advertising posters.
The heart of this market is the posters produced by the railway companies in
the 1920s and 1930s promoting the attractions of seaside resorts and other
tourist destinations. The highlight of Christie's sale is a large poster of
a bathing belle on the top board of the lido in a surprisingly bucolic New
Brighton, which seems to rival Monte Carlo in sophistication. This striking
image, with a fashionable art deco appeal, has never appeared at auction and
could sell for 6,000, possibly to a nostalgic inhabitant of the northern town.
There are also lively posters of Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare in 1960,
promising innocent fun on the beach, for up to 700. For worldly travellers
there are posters promoting Seville and the Co^te d'Azur, Nassau and Bermuda,
but greater interest is likely to be shown in 10 rare London tram posters,
advertising destinations such as Hampstead Heath and St. James's Park, and
a 1922 map of the London Underground, with a top estimate of 600.
It is hard to find a vintage poster in perfect condition, but restorers can
work wonders and for a few hundred pounds you can transform your home with
a vivid image of a dream world, in film or memory. Christie's adds 20 per cent
to the hammer price but these are still auctions with a relatively low entry
point. If you miss out in September the saleroom has added one more poster

"To dream anything
that you want to dream. That is the beauty of the human mind.
To do anything that you want to do. That is the strength of the
human will. To trust yourself to test your limits. That is the
courage to succeed."
--Bernard Edmonds
"There are those of us who are always about to live. We are waiting until things
change, until there is more time, until we are less tired, until we get a promotion,
until we settle down -- until, until, until. It always seems as if there is some
major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living."
-- George Sheehan
"Let a person rejoice when he is confronted with obstacles, for it means that
he has reached the end of some particular line of indifference or folly, and
is now called upon to summon up all his energy and intelligence in order to extricate
himself, and to find a better way; that the powers within him are crying out
for greater freedom, for enlarged exercise and scope."
--James Allen
