Classic Weekend For Pebble Beach

The 55th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will be Aug. 21 on the Monterey Peninsula, capping a weekend of activities drawing thousands of international auto enthusiasts.

The weekend also will include the 2005 Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, just outside downtown Monterey (Aug. 19-21); Concorso Italiano, featuring hundreds of Italian-made exotics and classics at Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside (Aug. 19); the Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction, put on by Beverly Hills-based RM Auctions Inc. (Aug. 19-20); and Monterey Sports and Muscle, presented by Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions at the Monterey Marriott (Aug. 20).

The 32nd historic auto races showcase numerous vintage race car classes, with Northern Californians driving some of the machines on a 2.2-mile road course.

Records Set During 13th Annual AYBF Dinner, Auctions.

A large crowd attended the 13th annual Farmers' Electric Cooperative Area Youth Benefit Fund dinner and auction last (Sunday) evening at the Chillicothe Elks Lodge and organizers say the fundraiser, which continued with a golf tournament today (Monday), would likely set a record in terms of the amount of money raised to be used to assist area families of children with medical conditions.

Specifically, organizers were expecting $36,475 to be raised, beating (slightly) the fund-raising record set just last year.

In 2004, $36,000 was raised through the two-day event.

Steve Shoot, FEC member services manager, reported that last night's main auction, which featured around 35 items, helped boost those numbers after a record $16,005 was raised.

"That beats our all time record (for the main auction) by nearly $1,000," he said.

The funds raised from the main auction, combined with the monies from the event's silent auction held prior to the dinner totalled $20,232. Shoot said that a total of around $29,000 was raised from both auctions and the pork loin dinner.

There were approximately 35 items on the main auction which featured a variety of items. Col Mike Miller called the auction in front of over 200 community members who participated in the event.

A Jack Nicklaus British Open fairwell signature piece, featuring the retiring golfer's signature on a British 5-pound note, accompanied by several pictures from the just completed British Open - brought in the most money of all the items on the main auction and set an all-time record in terms of bringing in the most money in main auction history. That piece was purchased by Steve Palmer who, in turn donated the item back to auction off and another individual purchased it.
