'By the way think the site is great and have been to quite a few auctions . I am making a nice little second income, but certainly not retiring, am going to take a week off work to check out the midweek sales to see if goods are any cheaper at these.

Auction News

Auto Auction Held at Old Bass Plant.

WILTON -- The cavernous building that once was an assembly line for famous-brand footwear was converted into a run-through for hundreds of used cars and trucks Friday.

From all indications the event, the initial selloff for the Western Maine Auto Auction, was a success as car dealers from northern New England bid on hundreds of vehicles that were rolled through the former G.H. Bass shoe factory and distribution center.

While organizers plan to hold the auctions weekly, Friday's was special in that it marked the beginning of yet another venture breathing new life into the acre-sized structure, which had been abandoned by the footwear company when it moved out of town.

"We have three auctioneers here," said promoter Dan Archer as the vehicles were bid off along three separate lanes simultaneously. "We call it organized chaos."

The auction was for dealers only -- no individual looking to land a bargain was allowed to participate -- and they opened doors and lifted hoods to check on vehicles that might sell in their lots.

Rapid-tongued auctioneers Phill McIntyre, Kevin Banache and Steve Trimm kept things moving at a brisk pace as each vehicle was paraded by would-be wooers in about a minute.

Just outside the building, dealer Tim Hammond of Mid-Coast Motors of Brunswick and an associate inspected a 1998 Ford F-150 truck just before it entered the bidding pit.

"We're looking for just about anything -- pickups, SUVs, cars," Hammond said.

He's particularly looking for vehicles in good condition and with low mileage -- "especially low mileage. That's what customers want," Hammond said.

Not all vehicles were sold if they didn't attract a minimum bid price. McIntyre waved off a 2002 truck from Knapp Brothers of Kingfield when the bidding stopped at $13,000. "They're looking for around $15,000," McIntyre announced.

Auction general manager Glenn Cunningham said roughly 200 dealers participated in Friday's event. A veteran of similar auctions in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, he said the Wilton site offers many advantages.

"There are a lot of good people here. The response has been tremendous," Cunningham, who is planning to move to the area, said. The building is now called the Bob Nichols Expos Center. It was the site of a three-day sportsman's exposition in March that drew thousands. Developers Nichols, Gil Reed, Mark Berry and Rich Johnson have been converting the Bass property with its nine commercial buildings into an economic development hub.

At least six other businesses are established at the site.

Organizers also see the Friday auctions as a boost to job creations and to other businesses in the area, such as motels, restaurants, and grocery stores. "We want to promote ourselves as a good business," Archer said.

Mike Whalen, son of nearby Whispering Pines Motel owners Tom Whalen and Sue Atwood, said one dealer so far had made reservations at the motel, situated on the west shore of Wilson Lake.

"I'm hoping it will lead to more," he said. "From what I heard it's just getting started."

Here's Where 'Luxury' and 'Discount' Meet Hideaways Cuts Prices on Villas, Resorts.

If you're looking for luxury in travel, but at a considerable discount, you couldn't do better than the high-living reservations company Hideaways International. In what is perhaps a sign of the times, the 26-year-old Hideaways has suddenly turned to discounts, specials and auctions to move its inventory of top-quality villa rentals and four- and five-star hotel resorts.

Since 1979, Hideaways -- located in coastal Portsmouth, N.H. (800-843-4433, www.hideaways.com) -- has operated primarily as a club for booking villas throughout the world, with a yearly membership fee of $185. That fee gave you access to the hundreds of enticing villa properties that Hideaways listed and endorsed.

You received a handsome, glossy and heavy book of remarkable photographs that captured the essence of hundreds of high-quality villas. After making your choice, you phoned Hideaways, which takes advantage of the low salary structure of its headquarters city in New Hampshire to maintain one of the most talented and gracious groups of telephone reservationists that I have ever encountered.

After you recited your membership number, you were given the address or phone number for contacting the owner and making your deal. Members were also alerted to the attractions of some of the world's most exquisite hotel resorts, and then routinely given a 5 percent to 10 percent discount off the normal rates of those properties (and numerous other perks) when the booking was made through Hideaways.

But a top staff and attractive properties are not enough in these cost-conscious days. Recently, Hideaways startled its demanding clientele by announcing a "Buy it Now" feature for slashing the rates of its hotel resorts.

At press time, if you went to Hideaways.com, and then clicked on "Buy It Now" at the top of the right-hand column on the site's main menu, you could purchase a three-night package at Jamaica's super-exclusive Tryall Club for $895. I recently phoned Tryall Club direct and requested three nights in August; the result was a $1,500 rate for the same three nights at an upscale two-bedroom villa.

"Buy It Now" features similar savings at more than 25 world-famous resorts in Europe.

If you're hell-bent for luxury, you'll achieve even greater savings by booking through Hideaway.com's auctions.

Four nights at the grand Pestana Palace Hotel, a national monument of Portugal overlooking the Tagus River near Lisbon, normally costing $2,328, was recently listed for a minimum bid of $1,164 on Hideaways' auction facility, valid until Dec. 31. Five nights at the Beach House on the island of Barbuda in the Caribbean, normally costing $3,075, had a current bid of $1,600 at press time.

Use of Hideaways' auctions or "Buy It Now" specials is available only to "registered guests," but registration is free of charge on the site.

I wouldn't normally recommend lodgings as expensive and elegant as those featured by Hideaways. But if it's absolute luxury you want, this is the cheapest way to get it.

West Bend Native Tries For National Auctioneering Title.

WEST BEND, Iowa A native of the north-central Iowa town of West Bend is competing for the International Auctioneer Championship this week in Pittsburgh.

Paul McCarten is competing against 90 other auctioneers.

His test: to auction off three randomly selected items before a panel of judges, audience of bidders and Internet audience.

The trick, he says, is to catch the crowd and hold their attention.

The scores are based on stage presence, sales and the auctioneer's opening and closing technique, among other factors.

Winners travel the country, presiding over auctions and promoting the National Auctioneers Association.

McCarten took third at the All-Around World Championships last October. In 2003, he was the Iowa State Championship Auctioneer.

This will be his third shot at the international prize trophy.

The Positive Club

"People waste most of their waking hours every day going through the motions, chatting idly, shuffling paper, putting off decisions, reacting, majoring in minors and concentrating on trivia. They spend their time in low priority tension relieving, rather than high priority goal-achieving activities."

-- Denis Waitley

"There are those of us who are always about to live. We are waiting until things change, until there is more time, until we are less tired, until we get a promotion, until we settle down -- until, until, until. It always seems as if there is some major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living."

-- George Sheehan
